To Blog or not To Blog.......

When the blogging idea started, I had no idea what it was about, but once I started ; I learned more about it throughout the class and more from searching throuhout other bloggs. However, to relate the blogging to a management class is definitely has such significant  effect on learning, because it belongs to students who can share ideas and discuss issues about various topics related to management. And because I know my posts are exposed to many other people ,so I must make informative and productive to my follower students and to whoever has any interest in blogging . The idea of blogging about our class's activities is effective in such a way that we learne from each others  ideas and also from a various analysis on various assignments, it also contribut to a discussion produces in the classroom. The value of learning from others' approach is a key that bring the class togather;thus it creates real learning atmospher, which  we can clearly see  within the group interaction and their comments on one another, but to a certain extent.
It is really hard to measure the magnitude of learning at this point, but I can say that it was not at the level of what it is supposed to be. Many of us fail to comment on each others' blog in critical way or an analytical way. I have visited almost every one’s blog and I scan some and I read others, I found that most girls, for examples got the highest numbers of comments on their blogs, probably they have more interesting ideas to contribute. And even that it is arguable, because most of the comments are; sort of I agree…and so on, and even the comments were part of the assignment, otherwise I doubt it if we would think to comment on each others’ blog.  I’m not here to judge any one, but the fact of the matter is  that the blog was there but we have not used it at level of academic learning. I have no doubt that our class is unique in its diversity and large enough to enrich our learning from management blog. See many of us work in different businesses, sales and services companies, and performs different tasks every day, but yet we missed to learn from each other's work experience. No doubt that some of us encounter or experience various situation at work which he/she may share with class (of course without getting in any ethical issues with their company in terms of privacy)  and we can learn from those experience, likewise the story the professor has shared with us recently in class concerning management issue that lady caused , but  were able to think about in class. It was an informative discussion in class  I believe. I'm sure many of us has encounter many other management issues that we would leaned from.

Another advantage we derived from the management class, as a whole, is that activities are group related which creates such enthusiastic environment.  It gave a chance to everyone to express their thoughts in the blog.  But it must reflect such environment in communicating with classmates throughout the blog by assigning more tasks on commenting.  I think multi-difference -out of class group assignment, like MaGangBang, would create such direct communication bridge with one another, which will enhance the blogging communication as well.  I did enjoy this class and  I loved the discussion in class among us, but I’m not sure if I will still use my blog so often after this semester, because I don’t know if someone would read or visit it.

No matter what , Still. management is life learning.......

The MCGanGBanG or Cheese Burger…

To begin my journey to McDonald, I have to say that the philosophy of “the customer is always right” which is known for centuries in business world appeared to have a different standards in some McDonalds that I have visited. Another famous statement “the customer is a king” seemed to mismanage easily as well in these two places I visited recently. No matter which of these statements I carried out with me, it was not an easy task to buy “McGanGBanG” sandwich even in diplomatic approach.
Last Sunday was a beautiful sunny day that gave me some impression of enjoying a nice visit to McDonald located in 4th avenue and 37Street in Brooklyn. This McDonald restaurant was kind of steady busy, but not as usually in is this area. However, as I’m preparing myself by getting my little notebook and pencil with description of my sandwich ready, I was thinking how  possibly can I  introduce such an extraordinary order without creating any kind of weird attention around me. So I was careful in choosing the line of the most pleasant person, as she seemed to be. As I came to face her, I took a couple second before I placed my order: “can I have please McGanGBanG sandwich”, it was a quick reflection answer from her and said what? She turned to the menu board and said what is it again? So I gently  described my sandwich from my little notebook and showed her a couples of pictures on my phone so she can have a full picture of what my sandwich looks like. The answer was we don’t have it, but you can make it, you have a double cheese burger and MCchicken sandwich in dollar menu, I said. Then she called the manager (Nereida) who said many things to me in Spanish after she heard about my order from Leila. The manager made a quick decision and refused completely my request, also she didn’t show any concern for trying to do anything about my order, even though I had described it to her that it is simply two items from dollar menu put together to form McGanGBanG. Her final answer was that she worked in McDonald for almost twenty five years and she never heard about such sandwich and she didn’t have to make since it is not in her menu board as it was described. Two other counter individuals were watching with a short smile and a face that indicate how weird it was my order. I have to say that the manager did not only lack communication skills, but also she lacked  the ability to solve unexpected problem, not to mention her limited awareness of  the customer's satisfaction priority in restaurant business.  Unfortunately I decided to walk away since it became visible to me that there was no possibility for this manager to do anything.
After all, I did not give up and I went the following day to Bay Parkway Avenue and 67th Street location in Brooklyn where I was faced almost by the same result with a different altitude. The manager at this location seemed to have no experience in management at all beside a seniority that may granted it her position. Shedid not make any effort to open a clear conversation with me or with the counter staff Gabriela. She just took a quick look at my pictures and shouted “hill no” left two other stuffs laughing about it.  Her approach was clearly inappropriate to call her manager. She did not take enough time to get more details about my order, she just rushed in responding “hell no” and then runway with her register she was caring towards the back of the store.Couple minutes later, she came  back while I’m trying to convince Gabriela that “McGanGBanG” is just a double cheese burger stuffed with a McChicken sandwich from your dollar menu. I did insist to at least to make my order according to the description of this sandwich but she added that she wouldn’t pursue such sandwich. The front counter person was helpful and she proposed to make it with exception for me to put it together. Of course that will not serve the purpose, and unexpectedly Rosanna (manger) was so skeptical about the whole thing and she showed that her leadership was not a model one compare to what McDonald’s mission statement is. Not to mention her attitude about the signature request, she acted so smart-withSarcasm - about it as if I’m asking her to sign a blank check. However, she added that she does not have enough power to call for such sandwich since it is not in the menu which was same excuse the previous manager from first store gave me. I couldn’t imagine what kind of management training McDonald had given to these individuals. I do know that McDonald established “Hamburger University” as a Center for training of mangers and leadership of owners. I myself was promised to attend this university when I was hired as manager in McDonald located in interstate 87(Upset New York). However, so far I don’t see that these two mangers have yet to receive an appropriate  management training and particularly and any problem solving training. It seemed to me that the management processes has not been maintained properly because the communication approach failed to have connection to understand what was going on before making such quick decision. And if they took some time and called their store’s manager or their supervisor, I’m sure they would have a satisfied answer.
Finally, it became clear to me that I should go with my second option of ordering the cheese burger with five pickles, well-done small French fries at same location. After I stressed to run out my order as it is, the fives pickles idea was a strange  specifically when I requested to be indicated in my receipt. The front counter person called the manger again and she replied that it will say extra pickle but not five pickles. Then she turned to the cooking area and showed to put five pickles in my burger but she run the receipt with just extra pickles. The front counter staff was not satisfied as I was but she couldn’t object her manger. At this point I my annoyance start to rise because it was not such a difficult thing to do more than to run my receipt with all the description I requested. As I noticed from a previous order (McGanGBanG), this manger’s communication approach was far away from showing any appropriate leadership. So I end up paying for another cheese burger to avoid any contact and I suggested entering extra pickles five times in order to see 5 on the receipt. The French fries order was done as it request, but it written as no “sauce” instead “no salt” which is the key used for such request. I did hold the line for a while because the process that was not guided by the manager, the next person on line got the burger and I got the receipt with five pickles on it.
I have no doubt that these two managers were promoted under their seniority rather than the experience or any kind of management training. The organization effectiveness by these two managers was not up to the level of what McDonald is known by, they also failed to have a suitable communication that can lead them to understand and take appropriate steps to solve the problem imposed by a customer.  Gabriela and Leila showed more concern to the problem much better than the managers who supposed to show a true leadership. I’m wondering if the store managers or the owners are aware of how they appointed  a shift manager, and under what measures they promoted their employees? It’s seemed to me that the seniority is the main standard to such position in these restaurants I have visited. And from my experience in McDonald management, I worked with such typical manager who worked in McDonald for a long time and have granted this position(manager) due to his seniority. However, it is encouraging to reward the loyal workers by offering them such opportunity in management career, but it must be granted along with an appropriate process and training. Communication is a crucial skill for one to be a manger and it cannot be gained. As matter fact, communication skill must be learned; therefor these McDonalds must stress these skills throughout an educational program followed by a periodically training in how to handle and solve unexpected problems. Good communication skills can set a good connection with customer and with a staff as well. In addition, a report of what happened in each shift must be briefly shared my all management’s personnel  to learn from any mistake, or to address any infrequent issue. These measures will not only improve their managerial skills, but it will also increase their awareness of a various situations so they can be prepared on how to take appropriate steps to solve the problems.
From my experience in food business as a manager, for long time, and as a co-owner to a restaurant twice, I can say that it is not an easy business one can manage, and I believe that a manger should have a strong communication skills along with thorough training on problem solving, because the management in food business-in general- is faced with various problems on daily basis.

"DISC" Assessment Explains Who You are ...

The leadership management diagnostic  had categorized me as type "D" , which is  discribed as dominante type oriented person. I was not satisfied with such  particular description alone  because I don't see myself  assimilate with  it percisely. But when I saw the description of "D" type in more details, it became visible to me how this assessment came to be amazing result.  for instance I do not like to be controlled  and I 'm strong in fulfilling my job obligation no matter what. I do remember when I was a restaurant's manger how many hours I used to put in, because  I want  my work to be complet and perfect as well, so I chose to be the first one to come in( at 10:am) and the last one to leave( around 2:00am). However, I also had a great conflict with my boss's wife who have no idea about a restaurant- business  and I refused to follow her instructions. I have to say that  she used to see me as "a dominant person" because I never consulted with her in some matters. For me,  her ideas  were good  in her classroom as a teacher not in restaurant . In any case, it was a lot of fun in working with  two bosses, one is a teacher and other one was a car dealer, so one can imagine  that "D" type  personality is appropriate . I don't see myself  to prefer other type  than what I am, but I am flexible to adopt or to even change  to other type according to what the environment  calls for .
There were some questions in this test that were kind of confusing to  how one can categorize himself (like Q 7 and  15);However, I did take same test again, but I let some else to doing for me , someone who knows me  very well for long time , and astonishingly  the result turned to be "DS" vs "DC" in first time.  I am convinced that this test is an accurate assessment  to determine people's management  "type".  But to what extend this can be used  by others in the work place may have a positive impact and  negative impact as well. It is an encouraging for one to know him/her-self so  he/she can do better  in their work. I believe that communication is one of the issues one can think about when selecting a team members.   On one hand  people with same "type" can form a typical team that work in harmony and in fast pace, on the other hand  this team can lack  ideas from other different types and reach thier fullest potential. Therefore , the work environment should not duplicate people's "type" in order to have a diverse work place which may bring different ideas and many skilled employees that will enrich the work environment .

Randy Pausch Lecture: Time Management

This is a very informative lecture and powerfull which you will enjoy and would not forget it .

Your Vision vs Your Future

As the video portrayed, the idea to have a vision for your future followed by an action so it can have a substance in reality down the road is the engine which motive individual towards their  goals.  Sometimes a person can dream as far as to rich a stars, but there is an unseen power of destiny that intervene to pull one out or to push one forward, so often we referred to it as “ it meant to be that way..” and this was not the aim of the video. Of course a person must be and stays positive regardless of the circumstances that may shift ones goals to a different direction. Soccer was my dream and my goal since I can tell how old I am. I grew up such goal in society that left with no right to dream higher more than the wall surrounding it house or home! .In any case , my first step was to engage in professional team so I can move forward which I was able to  do when I was in high school. Unfortunately I was not able to continue because it has conflict schedule with my school and I made decision to stay in school instead of dedicating all my time to my dream. See here is an obstacle that pooled one out from his/her main goal’s path.
Well, navigation was my second dream I was looking forward to grasp because travelling around the world was my goal and still, so working in commercial ship or cruise ship is a great opportunity for me to see the world. So I went to Antwerp Navigation School (25 miles north of Brussels) but my financial situation was deeply falling which forced for me to withdraw completely. These are my two main personal goals I was looking for to reach.
One historian said: “if you want to be the way you want to be, then stay where you are, and if you want to be somebody else you come to America”. Indeed it is where you can be somebody else in many different ways, but you have to made a decision so you can have a destination then you can draw your plan
(or your direction) towards your future.  I decided once to go into restaurant business and I invested my saving in opening one in Brooklyn. Then I realized that Manhattan is more likely to expend my business without considering the risk of such business that  required a big capital. so I did open one in Hills kitchen area where competition is -no joke- required strong management skills which –in part- I was qualified for. My long years of experience in restaurant business was not enough .However, I still attend to restart again this business when I have the  necessary resources for it. Knowledge in business is one of these resources which I’m about to grasp throughout my college career. I'm willing to work hard in accomplishing my goal ande enjoying my way in moving forwards to it as much as I can.

The confict leads to......Watch this...

This is the Most Interesting Voting Process.......

Who Wants to Lead in Decision Making .....

Our  Class is a large class and is very divers in many ways, which makes it interesting environment to very hard to bring everyone to a agree 100%. It is not easy at all; this is no deference from trying to keep the “egg” unbroken in last class experiment.

To reach a decision by such diverse class that is suitable to everyone is certainly a challenging task. First we tried finding the majority throughout a collective voting process and that posed many issues.  This diversity and the differences have evoked many ideas, but it also complicates the voting process as well. And I believe because some of us were altering their position as new ideas raised in class. No doubt that self-interest played a significant role in shifting positions and heated the atmosphere of making one’s point to be heard which leaded to some conflict on the essay issue. Also the size of the class along with some disorderly voting proccess and other issues has weakened the communication among us and the volunteer leader and vice versa.
As many others in my class, my big issue  was the essay  which valued the most and also took away alot of my points. I completely opposed it because the time consuming in exam .However,  I  did withdraw  because I saw that many ideas that may serve the interest of majority –according to voting process – was not considered only because some of us rejected it without giving any alternatives. But after I heard the supporting of the essay, I shifted to Collaborating in way that would not dismiss others’ benefit from the essay. So I shared my suggestion with some colleagues before I announced in class. So I proposed to keep the essay question, but to be an optional –as extract credit- which will serve everyone. In unfortunately, it was rejected by the professor, I believe.
I have to say that the class was in state of disorder and the leading person was pushed aside by couple’s class mates to get their points across in “compete to win” process which brought us to a starting point until the concerns’ issues were stated on the board.
I think if we had a precise and clear information on hands about the professor‘s position towards “the essay issue”, it would accelerate the voting process because we will be certain on what we were about to achieve from voting process. In any case, I believe that “Collaborating process” would serve its purpose in such diverse opinions. In one hand, it would ease the conflict through multi groups who would consult among their members. At the same time we would have the best alternative because everyone would be engaged in common decision.

Is not easy to keep an egg happy.....!!

Generally, all members of  my team were exited and were fully engaged in this process. Many ideas were on  circulation, ideas how to execute the plan, drowing , and everyone had an  open minde on how to choose the best plan to meet our goal which it  was given a serious thoughts. The goal was clear to everyone and was maintained throughout the process. The first three steps were fully maintained to certain extend, but  not step by step .our group was effective in planning and choosing the most effective plan because everyone was  participating, so  we didn't find any difficulty to agree on the best plan to achieve our goal. Evaluation of our resource was  detailed enough as it first step in planning, I believe that because it was kind emerged with  evaluation of the  plan .  Our group's skills for such goal was one aspect that we were not aware of,  which left the group's members without a specific task , in other word we  didn't assign a single function to a single individual. The time frame played a big role in evaluating and finding  an alternative strategies, we decided to go for one plan as it was sketched and also because we didn't want to fall in changing a plans as time limit comes to end. the implementation of our plan was folowed ,executed  properly  and according to our drawing .  the result unfortunately was not pleasant  which explained that there must be  something- if not many things- went wrong. I believe that we misevaluate our resources which lead to misuse it  ,for instance we ends up with many straws on hands. In addition to not meeting the goal, it  was because we did not distributed the functions among us inndividually,it was a collective work .   Even dough the result was not pleasant , I'm sure that we have learned a lots from this activity that will add some learning to our comprehension which will certainly  enhance our involvement  in other projects to come.

Please Take off Your shoes...:_-))

My background as an Arab has injected me with so many things that I find hard to get rid of some. However, the idea of taking off shoes by the door before entering the house is an essential tradition and cultural mannerism that I still hold to until today while many sees it as unnecessary act. I have noticed how people felt insulted in this society when asked to take off their shoes when I invited them over to my place. This is  a simple and easy to do but yet  brings discomfort to people  and a nuisance for myself. One of the many things that took some getting used to was the  common use of what I consider to be foul language.  Two things Arab men refuse to disclose any information about is "his wife", moreover never ask  him anything about "his car or his wife". Yet I felt very awkward when a customer asked me  if his wife is beautiful enough when I was working in a restaurant a long time ago. After all I have to say that I have adapted to many things I came across in the  society here except the idea not  "taking shoes off at the door".

About me :

Since I came to US. I have enjoyed visiting many States including New York. New York just has its attraction, its won charm, and its magnificence that doesn't exist anywhere else. I also traveled to other countries like France, Spain, and Belgium, and I have lived in Europe for quite a while .I came here with my own vision and with ambition to carry out my plan in order to accomplish my goal which was to own a business. I worked hard and save quite a good capital to start my business. So my first restaurant business was established in Brooklyn in 2003. But I had a partner who played a big role in my dream to vanish within six month. I can say that It was in part my bad decision in associating with someone who had no idea about a food business, also the trust that's brought everything else to ends at first stage of establishing a restaurant. However, I opened another one in Manhattan which was my plan to recover from the previous failure. The high rent and level of competition in the Hells’ Kitchen area as well as other factors had forced me to close it down. without getting in the details of what others factors, I have learned a great deal of experience in the restaurant business.
I also learned not to give up no matter how many times I failed. This is one of the reasons I have enrolled in college to study business, so I can merge my experience with what I'm willing to learn academically. Management is part of my road toward my goal
